The Western High School
 Alumni Association

TheWestern High School Alumni Association (WHSAA) was formed in 1987 under the name Western-Ellington Alumni Association. The name was changed in 2007 after the Ellington school formed its own alumni organization. An incorporated, not-for-profit association WHSAA strives to preserve the spirit and memories of The Western High School and its many alumni. Its functions include encouraging alumni support for maintenance and preservation of the old schoool building, locating and keeping in touch with former students, holding various alumni functions and aiding class members with reunions.

The database of WHSAA currently contains records of almost 14,000 alumni. We try to keep in touch through our newsletter sent to paid members by either e-mail or regular mail. WHSAA keeps information confidential, although the association, at the discretion of its Board, will provide mailings appropriate to alumni interests, such as class reunions and other functions.

The board welcomes help from volunteers for the association's many activities, which, in addition to assisting in the search for alumni include:

A quarterly newsletter, which reports on developments of interest to Western High alumni. Its photographs and articles bring accounts of planned reunions, alumni memories of school days, and descriptions of the remarkable achievements by alumni since their days at Western.

The collection and preservation of Western-Ellington memorabilia, yearbooks, photos, and documents.

Various projects in support of the traditions and history of alumni. One example is a plaque mounted in May 2006 next to the school's front door. It marks the association's successful effort to get the school building officially declared as a District of Columbia Historic Building. Another example is the Veteran's Memorial placed at the front of the building on Memorial Day, 1994. It commemorates alumni who served their country in the armed forces.
